IMTC commercializes
its technologies through several means, including licensing, sales,
technology assistance, and the creation of new Georgia-based companies.
The creation of new companies is the way that IMTC can provide the
greatest economic impact to the State of Georgia.
IMTC together with the BioMedical Interactive Technology Center
(BITC) and the Center for Signal and Image Processing (CSIP) have
created or been central to the formation of six high-tech
companies
operating
in
Georgia.

Nexidia™ (www.nexidia.com)
is the leader in high-speed phonetic searching. The company’s
flagship product is the result of a research project undertaken
between IMTC, CSIP and the Georgia Tech Library to provide a searchable
archive of the audio and video collection of former Georgia Senator
Sam Nunn. The technology developed proved to be fast, flexible,
and very useful to a number of commercial applications. The technology
allows searching of large collections of audio or video files by
typing in keywords that are then searched for phonetically in the
audio stream.

Cyber-Care Inc (www.cybercare.net)
is the leader in home-based telemedicine systems. Cyber-Care was
formed based on the technology developed by BITC and IMTC with
the Medical College of Georgia in a research project for the Department
of Defense. Medical Industries of America, based in Florida, acquired
CyberCare in 1999 and took the name Cyber-Care to show its new
emphasis
on telemedicine. IMTC/BITC continues to work with Cyber-Care in
developing the next generation of home telemedicine systems.

Polycom (www.polycom.com)
is the first spin-off company from CSIP, formed to develop and
market
advanced applications of Digital Signal Processing. IMTC is now
working with Polycom to develop new software tools to complement
their hardware products.

Syntermed, Inc (www.syntermed.com)
utilizes cardiac imaging tools developed by Emory University,
Georgia
Tech’s Biomedical Interactive Technology Center and College of
Computing. These tools were central to the foundation of this
new company.
Syntermed’s initial focus is on cardiac imaging, but business plan
is to offer management, regulatory, and liability protection services
which are required to commercialize software products for all medical
imaging modalities

Neural Signals (www.neuralsignals.com),
a new startup company, was founded by Dr. Phil Kennedy who did his
early work in neural implants and neural signal analysis while working
at BITC. Neural Signals is currently funding research efforts at
BITC to improve the implantable electrode electronics.
