The Georgia Intersat
project aims to help bridge the digital divide facing rural schools
in accessing the Internet. As the Internet becomes more critical
for the education of students, the reality is that many isolated,
rural schools may share one 56k dialup modem for the entire school,
severely limiting use of the Internet in the classroom. We are
helping these rural schools look at alternative methods of accessing
the Internet; especially using 2-way satellite technology. The
project is installing satellite systems at 12 schools in remote
parts of Georgia, and then analyzing the use of the satellites,
to see if the improved bandwidth is useful to the schools, and
to determine if the added latency using satellite is a hindrance
to the school’s use of this technology. The project has been
funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s
Division of Advanced Network Infrastructure & Research.
