The unification
of multiple media (so called unimedia) in desktop systems is clearly
expected to be one of the most crucial and increasingly marketable
technologies over the next several years. A collaboration effort
between IMTC and the Graphics Visualization and Usability Laboratory
(GVU) has concluded a three year research effort to study and build
teleconferencing systems that exploit current trends in networking;
computing; desktop
video, audio and resource collaboration; and human gesture recognition
and animation for low bandwidth telepresence. We have thus far
built a Windows based teleconferencing prototype capable of hosting
a point to point visual and audio collaboration with shared windows
containing data, text, images, animations of gestures and videos.
The final report for year three explains more about this year’s
efforts.
