Many deaf children
have great trouble learning English. Most of the students read
books but must have a teacher give them signed definitions of words
they do not know. This requires the student to highlight questionable
words while reading and then spend time later with an instructor
receiving definitions.IMTC in collaboration with the Center for
Rehabilitation Technology, developed an American Sign Language
to English video dictionary prototype to make it easier for the
children to expand their vocabulary. In our system, the children
read a story on a computer and by clicking on a word they don't
know, they bring up a written dictionary definition along with
a video clip showing the ASL signed definition. This gives the
children the ability to read and learn new words at their own pace.
