On November 26,
2001, The Georgia Centers for Advanced Telecommunications Technology
(GCATT), Georgia Tech, and Shepherd Center received a $5 million,
five-year federal grant to develop applications of wireless technologies
to enhance the independence of people with physical and cognitive
disabilities."To promote universal access to mobile wireless
technologies and explore their innovative applications in addressing
the needs of people with disabilities."
With an overall goal of promoting independence and autonomy of people
with disabilities, the RERC has two primary aims: 1) ensure equitable
access to mobile wireless products and services by people with disabilities
of all ages and abilities; and 2) investigate promising applications
of mobile wireless technologies in support of employment, independent
living and community integration of people with disabilities.
IMTC is leading several efforts in the RERC. John Peifer is the Co-Director
of the RERC and is leading the development efforts in Telerehabilitration.
Ed Price is the Director of Industry Relations for the RERC and is
leading the research into Evaluation of Emerging Mobile Wireless
Technologies and the development efforts in Multi-modal and Universal
Interfaces (such as the V2
Universal Remote Console Standard), as
well as the dissemination efforts. Maribeth Gandy is leading the
education and training efforts in the RERC.
IMTC is taking steps to evaluate the emerging mobile wireless
technologies and encourage industry leaders to incorporate
universal access into emerging product concepts. IMTC is also
responsible for the Wireless
RERC website.
