As part of its
work with the Wireless RERC, IMTC is an active participant in the
V2 technical committee of the International Committee for Information
Technology Standards (INCITS).
V2 is presently developing the “Protocol to Facilitate Operation
of Information and Electronic Products through Remote and Alternative
Interfaces and Intelligent Agents,” a protocol that aims to enable
technology products to be more accommodating to the needs and preferences
of users by allowing for alternative user interfaces. IMTC is actively
supporting the efforts of V2 through contributions to both the
development of the protocol standard and through implementation
of experimental prototypes compliant with the protocol.
IMTC's prototyping efforts include the development of a Universal
Remote Console (URC)
application for a Pocket PC handheld computer. The URC software
will allow a user to remotely control a compliant target device
through a user interface on the Pocket PC that has been rendered
to meet the user's needs and preferences.
Such preferences may include language, interface complexity, or glyph-based UI.
To support these preferences the URC may download resources from the target device
or from the Internet.
In addition to the URC prototype, IMTC is engaged in the development
of prototype target devices compliant with the protocol. One such
target is a simulated elevator that provides accessibility via
the URC protocol. Additionally, IMTC's URC prototype has been designed to utilize Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and will support control of standard UPnP-enabled consumer electronics.
